Day Nine - Lagrono to Najera - over 30 km

We have decided that the Spanish race and their eating habits are unusual. I'm sure that is a bit of a generalization but it's how we feel.
For example: we have just spent just under 2 days in Logrono. During that time we had to eat. Lunch doesn't start till after 2.00 pm and it seems to involve people in bars/restaurants standing up, drinking lots of very cheap red wine and eating little snacks (tapas or pinchos). NO-ONE sits down at a table and eats a proper meal (not till after 3.00 anyway!). If you are lucky enough to find a table you can actually sit at and a menu you can order from then the next problem arrives - vegetables! There are NO vegetables to be had on a Spanish menu. I have seen them in a supermarket, I saw a display of them in the bar we were in last night, but we cannot find any on a menu to eat! I am craving broccoli (something you never thought you would hear and I never thought I would say!)
See it's weird.
So you have tapas for lunch at 3 o'clock but then it gets to dinner time.... On Friday night we finally found a place for dinner at 9.00, yes NINE O'CLOCK! And we were early, there were people still arriving when we left at quarter past eleven! Now what is that about?
Weird!
In Lunenburg people have supper at 5 o'clock!

La Rioja has it's own Parliament.

There were so many old churches.
They all close for lunch - of course!

Geocaching on the Camino - can you see the cache?

Stork nests.

We found this interesting shop!

Chainmail, Samurai sword or plastic spoon?

So today we reached Najera.

A really old monastery!

The newer monastery. The Monastery of Santa Maria La Real.

The really old front door.

View from our room

Strange holes in the nearby mountain.

Gateway of Charles 1 of Spain.
A large dome shaped like a half orange with painted caissons (1595).

Tomb of dona Mencia Lopez de Haro! (1367).

Plateresque style walnut door!

The alter was decorated in 1690. We have noticed that
there is a preference for a lot of ornate gold!

Detalle de la Virgen gótica que actualmente preside la cueva del Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera
In 1044 Don Garcia went hunting and found this cave.
Inside he saw the image of the Virgin Mary.
He built a hostel for pilgrims and a monastery here.
This statue was made in the 13th century and stands in the cave.
I managed to delete the photo I took, but I found this one on the internet.
It is a beautiful statue - Mary has such a kind face.

  1. Great photos. I was in Milan for 1 day and never had a real meal. Nothing was open for lunch, so we had gelato - a couple of times actually, since it was all we could find and we were hungry... (and it was fabulous). We had to catch a train at 8:00pm. None of the restaurants were open before 8, so we had chocolate and a bottle of wine on the train.
