Day Six - Puente La Reina to Estella - about 22kms apparently!

Last night after a rest and writing the blog we decided to walk the 10 minute hike into the centre of Puenta La Reina. We waved good bye to some Canadians in the bar and walked across the small car park and looked towards town. We then turned round and walked back to the bar - you can do too much walking!
We had dinner last night with a man from New York state and 2 people from Ireland - it was fun! The meal was in the dining room shared between the albergue and our hotel and it was buffet style - including the wine and all at a fixed price! I think some people drank a lot of wine.

Our walk was flatter today - sort of!
We had to walk through the medieval town of Puenta La Reina on our way - there were some amazing old houses.

In the distance we could see old hill top towns - we had to climb up to the centre of this one and then back down the other side.

Someone with a lot of time on their hands has
planted this map of the world!
We walked for quite a way on an old Roman road. Thousands of pilgrims had walked on the same same stones as us not to mention Roman soldiers before that! Mind you it was crazily uneven and difficult to walk on AND not at all straight! When your feet are feeling slightly tender and tired uneven surfaces are not great.
For some of the way today we walked
along an old Roman road

We sat in the middle of this Roman bridge to eat a snack.

These 'Roman' steps were very steep.
Gary helped this lady to climb down as she had hurt her knees.

More uneven and difficult to walk on Roman road!

Lunch break in an albergue in Lorca.

The clouds kept threatening rain.
Today the air was filled with the perfume of wild flowers. We saw wild rosemary, fennel, roses and honeysuckle as well as lots of poppies!
The fields are full of wild flowers.

An old church against the skyline.

Ahhhhhh!
On reaching Estella we had to walk a further 1.6 km across the town to our accommodation - that was hard work as our bodies were ready for a rest. Then we were told the lift (elevator) to our room was broken and we had to walk up the stairs - it was just as well we were on the first floor! Both of us took of our shoes, lay down on the beds and fell asleep.

  3. Gary has joined the ranks of Camino Angels! Your photos illustrate your comments very well. The uneven path looks tough, but the rest looks lovely. When do you have a rest day?

    2. Ours rest day is in Logrono. http://www.spain.info/en_CA/que-quieres/ciudades-pueblos/otros-destinos/logrono.html
It is the main city for Rioja so there will be lots of very cheap and good wine, which is a bonus!

    3. Very well planned - to rest in the heart of the wine country!
